چکیده

Background. Several studies have used phylogenetics to investigate Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) transmission among Men who have Sex with Men (MSMs) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, revealing many transmission clusters. The Quebec HIV genotyping program sequence database now includes viral sequences from close to 4, 000 HIV-positive individuals classified as MSMs. In this paper, we investigate clustering in those data by comparing results from several methods: the conventional Bayesian and maximum likelihood-bootstrap methods, and two more recent algorithms, DMPhyClus, a Bayesian algorithm that produces a measure of uncertainty for proposed partitions, and the Gap Procedure, a fast distance-based approach. We estimate cluster growth by focusing on recent cases in the Primary HIV Infection (PHI) stage. Results. The analyses reveal considerable overlap between cluster estimates obtained from conventional methods. The Gap Procedure and DM-PhyClus rely on different ∗Corresponding author : [email protected] 1 ar X iv :1 70 8. 09 44 3v 1 [ st at .A P] 3 0 A ug 2 01 7 cluster definitions and as a result, suggest moderately different partitions. All estimates lead to similar conclusions about cluster expansion: several large clusters have experienced sizeable growth, and a few new transmission clusters are likely emerging. Conclusions. The lack of a gold standard measure for clustering quality makes picking a best estimate among those proposed difficult. Work aiming to refine clustering criteria would be required to improve estimates. Nevertheless, the results unanimously stress the role that clusters play in promoting HIV incidence among MSMs.

Shigella spp. with Reduced Azithromycin Susceptibility, Quebec, Canada, 2012–2013

During 2012-2013 in Montreal, Canada, 4 locally acquired Shigella spp. pulse types with the mph(A) gene and reduced susceptibility to azithromycin were identified from 9 men who have sex with men, 7 of whom were HIV infected. Counseling about prevention of enteric sexually transmitted infections might help slow transmission of these organisms.

Intercontinental dispersal of HIV-1 subtype B associated with transmission among men who have sex with men in Japan.

UNLABELLED Transmission clusters of HIV-1 subtype B uniquely associated with the epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM) in East Asia have recently been identified. Using the Los Alamos HIV sequence database and the UK HIV drug resistance database, we explored possible links between HIV MSM epidemics in East Asia and the rest of the world by using phylogenetic and molecular clock analyse...

HIV Modes of Transmission in Sudan in 2014

Background In Sudan, where studies on HIV dynamics are few, model projections provide an additional source of information for policy-makers to identify data collection priorities and develop prevention programs. In this study, we aimed to estimate the distribution of new HIV infections by mode of exposure and to identify populations...

Risk behaviours and HIV infection among men having sexual relations with men: baseline characteristics of participants in the Omega Cohort Study, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

OBJECTIVE To describe characteristics of men having sex with men (MSM) participating in the Omega Cohort, to describe HIV-positive participants at baseline interview, and to estimate HIV incidence. METHODS The Omega Cohort is a study on the incidence and psychosocial determinants of HIV infection among MSM living in Montreal. MSM complete a questionnaire and are tested for HIV every six month...

Trends of HIV subtypes and phylogenetic dynamics among young men who have sex with men in China, 2009–2014

To investigate the origins of HIV transmission and phylogenetic dynamics among men who have sex with men (MSM), a total of 1205 newly diagnosed HIV-infected 16-25 year-olds were recruited in 13 provinces across China between 2009 and 2014. Based on phylogenetic analyses of partial pol sequences, HIV-1 subtypes including CRF01_AE (45.3%), CRF07_BC (37.8%), subtype B (6.1%), and B' (3.7%), as wel...
